OKN Painting 100 is up 58% this year. Here's what's actually behind it
The OKN Painting 100 closed its September 9, 2026 revision at 1,172.50, against a base of 1,000. That's up 58.23% over the trailing twelve months, the largest move of any live OKN index this vintage. No other category or regional index on the platform comes close.
What the data shows
The headline number sits inside a confidence range of 1,020.69 to 1,346.89. That band matters. A print of 1,172.50 is the center of the estimate, not a fact carved in stone, and the low end of the range would put the year's gain closer to 2%. Read the 58% as the most likely outcome, not the only one.
What backs the number is real activity, not a handful of outlier sales. The current vintage draws on 159 recorded transactions and 435 valuations, a deeper sample than either of OKN's regional indices. The bundle behind this index separates a value component (5,974.13) from an activity component (159), which is the platform's way of saying the move is a mix of prices going up and more paintings changing hands, not one or the other alone.
The market context
Painting's move looks even sharper set against the rest of the board. OKN Verified 100 is up 39.44% over the same window. OKN South Africa is up 20.65%. OKN Nigeria is up 32.76%. All four indices share the same September 9 vintage and the same USD base of 1,000, so the comparison is apples to apples on percentage terms even though the four track different things.
Painting isn't just ahead of the pack. It's ahead by a wide enough margin that it's worth asking whether painting, as a category, is where new money in African art is actually landing this year, relative to sculpture, works on paper, or geography-defined baskets like Nigeria and South Africa.
What it means and what to watch
Take the causal question honestly: this piece cannot point to one gallery, one artist, or one auction house and say "that's what moved the number." The dossier behind this index doesn't tag individual transactions by medium, so no single sale can be credited or blamed for the 58% print. What can be said is narrower and more useful: painting, as a category, has both a higher price level and a wider audience than it did a year ago, and the sample backing that claim is one of the deepest on the platform.
Watch the next revision to see whether the activity component keeps climbing or whether this vintage was a high water mark. A single quarter of new transactions can move a confidence band a lot when the underlying sample, while large for OKN, is still small in absolute terms.
Method note: figures are from the OKN Painting 100 index, methodology blend-v1, vintage 2026-09-09. Index values lag the transactions and valuations that feed them and are subject to revision as later data arrives.
